At 6:25am HMS Aboukir was hit by a single torpedo fired from U9. Captain Drummond gave the order to abandon, shortly after U9 fired twice upon HMS Hogue, who had stopped to help the stricken Aboukir, and the damage was such that it took only 10 minutes for her to sink. The U9 now headed for the Cressy and at 7:20am fired 2 torpedoes, 1 which hit her on the starboard side. The damage was not fatal but U9 turned and fired her last torpedo, a successful strike which sunk the Cressy within fifteen minutes.
